1. Ample Seating
First and foremost, you’re going to want to make sure that you have plenty of room for everyone to sit down. In general, you’ll want to have enough seating for everyone who lives in your household to sit in the living room at one time — comfortably — as well as at least two extra seats for guests. A sectional sofa can be a good option, or you may want to look into a sofa and loveseat set. If you don’t think your couch is going to be big enough to provide ample seating for everyone, adding a couple of decorative chairs can be a nice way to spruce up your space and provide additional seats for everyone.
2. Proper Lighting
Another thing that you should think about is ensuring that you have plenty of lighting in your living room. You probably won’t want to rely on your overhead light, which might be too bright in some areas of the living room but might not provide enough lighting in other places, such as seats that are tucked off to the corner of the room. Along with overhead lighting — which you can add a dimmer to, making it easier for you to adjust the lighting for the situation and mood — you may want to consider adding a few lamps in various places so that you can get just the right amount of light from any seat on the room.
3. Wall Decor
Bare walls can make your home look unfinished. Even though you probably won’t want to go overboard with too much on your walls, adding a few framed photographs, paintings or other decorative items to your walls can be a nice touch. This can also be a good way to add a few pops of color, such as if your living room furniture is neutral and you’d like to take things up a notch.
Decorating your living room isn’t as simple as just adding a couch and chairs. If you add these three necessities, however, you can enjoy a well-furnished living room that you’ll be proud to entertain guests in and that your family will love and find to be comfortable.
